To start a nonprofit in Maryland, you must establish a non-stock corporation with the state, draft bylaws, and obtain tax-exempt status from the IRS. There are many steps including: recruit a board, draft governing documents including by-laws, file articles of incorporation, and, apply with the IRS for EIN number (tax ID). There are many components to each of these steps.
